GRANT RECIPIENT SPOTLIGHT – Black Border Theatre
Black Border Theatre is an all-Indigenous youth theatre ensemble based in Albury- Wodonga, supported by industry-experienced First Nations creatives and mentors.
Black Border Theatre works to create a safe and welcoming environment for young indigenous artists, helping them to connect with their culture through theatre and storytelling.
In 2021, the Black Border Theatre approached the AWCC board for a grant of $5,000 to help assist with the project “Tell Your Story”.
The project ran for 10 weeks commencing in April of 2022 through term 2 and finished with a performance at the Butter Factory in July
(see photos below of a snapshot of the performers).
The “Tell Your Story” project offered an opportunity for local indigenous high school students to develop their theatre skills, explore their history, culture & experiences to write and perform their own life story. The project worked towards the young performs gaining confidence and being proud of their identity and culture.
